Careers Information

Some people just walk straight into their perfect job, but for the rest of us it’s usually not so easy. So if you’re looking for work, or just want a change of direction, there are lots of ways you can look for the job you want:

Job centres, recruitment agencies, jobs pages in newspapers and job vacancies online
These are all good places to look for work. Many people find their jobs through them, and you should certainly use them.

  • Jobcentre Plus is gradually being introduced to replace Jobcentres. Jobcentre Plus brings together help looking for a job and help in claiming benefits under one roof. Local offices have a range of job vacancies.
  • Recruitment agencies – these are usually privately run, but you can register with most for free. Some cover any type of job, but many specialise in particular types of work.
  • Jobs pages in newspapers - different papers advertise different kinds of jobs on different days of the week. It’s worth getting to know them. Many local libraries get copies of newspapers every day, which you can check.
  • Job vacancies online - there are loads of websites advertising job vacancies.  Some specialise in specific sectors ie. construction, secretarial etc. Most sites give you the option of getting daily updates with jobs that might suit you.

For a really creative jobhunt, you could also try:

  • Networking - networking simply means involving other people in your job search. Tell people what work you’re looking for. Ask for their help. Find out if they know anyone else who can help you.
  • Not qualified enough? Apply anyway - seen a job you’d love, but don’t think you’re qualified? Apply anyway. Tell them why you’d be great at the job. Employers like enthusiasm and initiative. You never know – they might be willing to give you a chance.
  • Applying ‘on spec’ - if you like the look of an employer, why not tell them so? You don’t need to wait for a job to be advertised. Get in touch with them. Tell them about yourself. Ask for a job. You could be just the person they’ve been waiting for, even if they didn’t know it themselves.
