Nanny/Childminder
Nanny/Childminder
A nanny comes to your house to look after your children. If you employ the nanny directly you normally pay their wage per family. You are also responsible for keeping tax and National Insurance records. Nannies don't have to be registered with the Care Commission.
A childminder looks after a small number of children in their own home. All childminders must be registered with the Care Commision. A childminder is self-employed and will charge a fee normally based on an hourly rate per child. More details can be found at www.childminding.org.
You might choose these options because you like your children being in a home environment – either in your own home, or in the childminder’s home. But you will need to think about what to do when the nanny or childminder take time off, or if they fall ill.
