The Lone Parent’s Grant
Who can apply?
Widowed, divorced, separated or single students bringing up at least one child.
What is it?
An extra grant of £1,150 a year, or extra disregards of income. The first payment is usually made on the first day of your course each year. But, to avoid hardship, you can ask for part of it to be paid on 1 August. You will have to pay this back if you don’t actually start your course.

The Additional Childcare Grant for Lone Parents
Who can apply?
Parents who already get the Lone Parent’s Grant. You can apply for both grants at the same time.
What is it?
Extra help with your formal childcare costs, up to £1,075 per year. ‘Formal childcare’ includes:
- child minders
- after school clubs
- nurseries and pre-school.
The childcare provider must be registered with the local authority if your children are aged 8 or under.

The Mature Students’ Bursary
Who can apply?
Lone parents, mainly.
What is it?
A discretionary bursary to help with the costs of registered or formal childcare. It does not cover childcare given by friends or family.
