Age 18-24
This is mandatory for people who have been claiming Jobseeker's Allowance for 6 months or more (early entry may be allowed under certain circumstances). It begins with the 'Gateway' period, and may then go on to a second stage.
The 'Gateway' period
This lasts for up to four months, and may include:
- the drawing up of a New Deal action plan
- career advice and guidance
- a two week ‘Gateway to Work’ course
- help with basic skills such as reading and writing, if needed.
After Gateway
If you don't have a job at the end of Gateway, you can choose one of two ways to study for a employment related qualification:
- a 6 months placement, including possible training one day a week
- Full-time education or training for up to 12 months.
