Introductory qualifications

Literacy and numeracy skills
Wordpower and Numberpower qualifications are for people who want to improve their reading, writing or numeracy. There are also opportunities to improve basic skills in communications and in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Scottish Wider Access Programme
The Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) offers alternative routes into further and higher education for adults who may lack the formal qualifications usually needed to get into learning at this level. It acknowledges the value of life skills and experience and helps candidates pick up the necessary study techniques to get successfully back into formal education.

Through a series of modules, SWAP candidates can brush up on core skills such as numeracy and computing before specialising in an area relevant to the area they wish to study. They will receive support and guidance all the way through from their trainers throughout this process.

On completion of the SWAP one year Access Programme, candidates are guaranteed access to college or university to study for a Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) or degree programme.

Skillstart, Lifestart and Workstart
Skillstart, Lifestart and Workstart programmes offer a basic grounding in core skills for work. They allow those with learning difficulties or those who would like to take their learning at a slower pace to develop and prove their abilities in life-skills relevant to employment.
