Older learner of the year

Bill Irvine, 60, from Shawlands in Glasgow, has experienced mental health problems for most of his adult life. He has also had ME for the last 14 years. “It’s very difficult to cope. I’ve had mental health problems for 25 years and there is still a terrible stigma attached to it. As a result, I’ve spent a lot of time indoors and have struggled with feelings of anxiety and from phobias. Eventually, you realise that the only person who can really help you out of it is yourself.”

Bill has been attending Gorbals Library & Real Learning Centre, a community facility which provides access to the latest internet technology and online learning, as well as offering traditional library and community services.

“At first I was very anxious, but the library has a great atmosphere, brilliant facilities and the staff are really friendly. They made me feel very welcome and I can honestly say it’s the best thing I’ve done in years.”

Bill found a new lease of life and is now using his new skills to help other people who suffer from mental health problems at a voluntary organisation called Gorbals LINK. “I go to the library as many times a week as possible. It has given me the confidence to take control of my life again and now I can help people who have found themselves in a similar situation to me.”

Bill has completed courses in basic IT, emails and web design and his ambition is to produce a web page for Gorbals LINK. “It’s the best thing I’ve done in years – if I can do it, anyone can. The staff couldn’t be more welcoming and friendly and the facilities are first class – I’m just sorry I didn’t do something sooner. The main thing is, I can live with my illness and I’m making the best of it, and if I can help others along the way then that’s even better.”
