Fitting learning into your life

Successful learners find the best way of fitting learning into their lives. So you need to think ahead about things like the best time, place and way to do your learning.

Get these right, and you’re off to a flying start. You’ll be much more likely to stick with your course.

Here are some of the things you should think about.  Alternatively check out our guide to learning styles.

Time - when can you learn?

Can you do full-time, part-time or flexible study?
You can learn many things by any of these methods – but some things you can only learn full-time. How much time can you commit to learning?

If you’re working, can you ask for study time off work?
Many employers will give you time off to study for work-related learning.

Have you got other commitments, such as family?
You may have to juggle your time to make room for learning. For example, can you find a few hours in the evening to learn?

Where can you learn?

At home
Distance learning, flexible learning and online learning all allow you to learn at home. This link will take you to more information on different types of learning.

Close to home
There may be more places in your local area where you can learn than you think. In particular, learning centres may give you choices you never knew you had.

At college or university
Your options have never been wider. There are now more places, and more courses, than ever before.

At work
More and more employers are supporting learning at work, often by day release at local colleges.

At a voluntary organisation
Volunteering can offer many ways to learn new skills in areas you are interested in.  This link will take you to more information on volunteering.
